Rome, October 15 – Service on Rome’s A metro line was interrupted Thursday after a train jumped off the tracks and hit a wall near Anagnina station. Two ATAC transportation company employees on board were unharmed. The train may have had damaged brakes, outgoing Transportation Councillor Stefano Esposito said. “I feel like crying,” he said of Rome’s accident-prone, financially troubled transport system. “We need a commissioner with special powers and the resources to deal with transportation in Rome,” he went on. “We must decapitate ATAC management. The company needs to be turned inside out like a sock,” he added. Codacons consumer group also sounded the alarm, calling for prosecutors to investigate the Rome metro system for aggravated fraud. “This is the straw that broke the camel’s back,” said Codacons chief Carlo Rienzi. “It is no longer possible to delay an in-depth judicial investigation into what lies beneath the continuous lack of service on Rome’s metro”. For its part, ATAC has activated two internal investigative committees to ascertain the causes of today’s accident.
