(ANSA) – Rome, November 6 – Consumer association Codacons strongly criticised the decision by Rome authorities to close schools in the capital and province due to bad weather Thursday, saying it had caused serious problems for families.
“The closure of schools in response to the weather alert is causing serious difficulties for families in Rome and the province and damage to the collectivity estimated at at least five million euros,” Codacons said. “The provision appears to respond more to the logic of fear than to a real need,” said president Carlo Rienzi, highlighting the difficulty for parents who had to take paid leave or engage a babysitter to look after their children. “Not to mention the fall in productivity linked to absence from work,” Rienzi continued. “All of this could have been avoided through careful prevention and correct maintenance of manholes, drains, underpasses, roads, metro stations etc in order to avoid flooding, transport disruptions and all the usual problems that are seen in the capital when there is a thunderstorm,” he concluded.
