(ANSA) – Rome, September 14 – Nearly nine million students will return to school on Monday and Tuesday, with the highest number of students in the Lombardy region at 1.18 million, Italy’s Education Ministry said.
The region with the second-highest number of students is Campania with 920,964, followed by Sicily at 763,529 students and Lazio with 741,633 students.
In the Italian public school system for the 2015-2016 academic year, over one million children are enrolled in preschool/kindergarten, 2.58 million in elementary, 1.64 million in middle school, and 2.62 million in high school.
Consumer association Codacons said it estimates that school supplies will cost an average of 500 euros per student this year, in addition to textbooks which will cost between 280-600 euros per student.
To help alleviate the economic burden of textbooks, Codacons created a website called “Libri Gratis” (Free Books) where students can exchange or gift used textbooks.
Meanwhile, Phase B of the “Good School” reform concluded Saturday, with 8,532 professorships assigned among 8,776 available.
Those figures represent a 97% acceptance rate among professors, leaving 192 who didn’t respond and 52 who didn’t accept.
Phase C of the reform, the expansion phase, will take place in the fall with more than 55,000 positions available.
