Codacons, M5s seek civil damages in Rome mafia trial

Rome, November 2 – The anti-establishment Five-Star Movement (M5s) opposition party and the Codacons consumer protection group applied formally Monday to be civil plaintiffs in the ‘Mafia Capitale’ trial that opens Thursday, judicial officials said. The party and the group made the application for civil damages because of the “moral and economic damage suffered by citizens” of Rome, they said in a joint statement. The legal application was signed by MP Roberta Lombardi, city councillor Marcello De Vito and Codacons Vice President Giovanni Pignoloni. Municipal officials and politicians are among those standing trial for alleged involvement in a mafia organisation that allegedly muscled in on city contracts worth millions.
