Beggars Win in the Exchange
ROME If ordinary Italians and Germany`s leader are anything to go by, Europe`s poorest citizens could be some of the biggest gainers from the switchover from 12 national currencies to the euro.
Nearly four in five Italians plan to give their last lire to homeless people and beggars when the euro arrives on New Year`s Day, a new survey issued Sunday revealed.
The consumer group Codacons questioned 500 people last week in eight cities throughout the country. The results would appear to mirror the generous intentions voiced by Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder, who told Bild newspaper he planned to give his first euro to the first beggar in his hometown of Hannover who asks for one.
